Hello!
My name is Dan Deininger! I'm the owner of this website... and first of all, I'd like to thank you for stopping by and checking out what we have to offer.
I am a "Web Consultant". I have also referred to myself as a web designer, web publisher, internet consultant, web host. The reason I now say Web Consultant is my clients now expect more than just web design or hosting. They want HELP in solving every problem or concern they have about using the world wide web. In other words, I earn a living helping solve small business' internet problems.. providing them web solutions. I have been doing this since 1994. For about the last 10 years my wife, Val, has been working with me, too. Our business is called Innovative Solutions Group.
Together, and with the help of a few others, over the years we have built 100s of websites. We are currently hosting over 250 sites. You can find out a bit more about our business by visiting www.inovativhosting.com. (The site has links to some of the sites we have built.) Most of the sites are in the $500 to $2500 price range.
Back in October (2008) through the marvels of FaceBook I reconnected with a college acquaintance from the early 70's named Gary Harvey. We brought each other up to date on the usual information about what we're doing, where we're living, family, etc. In the process of exchanging info I found out Gary was into affiliate marketing and he found out I was into web publishing, etc. He then asked a question that planted the seed that has grown into this site which was basically "What does it take to be a web designer/web publisher?" (Thanks, Gary!) This led to an interesting discussion with Val at the FireTower Coffee shop just below our office. The end result of that discussion and many more with others was "Hey! This really is something that we could show other people how to do... because we are doing it!"
Then began the process of identifying what it is we do in our business and how to transfer that knowledge to someone else. What we have come up with is an online "workshop" solution. Most people are familiar with workshops. A one or two day workshop is where you are given the resources, the tools you need, and the instruction to quickly learn how to do something.
How it works
We have expanded on this concept and created a 4 week online workshop. You get your materials late Sunday night or early Monday morning and have until Friday to go through them and finish the homework assignments. Over the weekend I will go over your work and give you feedback. So, you are not on your own! This also gives you incentive to get your work done!
If something is not clear you can ask questions on that week's assignment and I will respond and if needed clarify, add, enhance, and improve the materials and resources. In other words, I will be your personal coach for 4 weeks! Of course certain restrictions apply, but you are certainly not left on your own!
We want to be sure we give everyone who takes our Web Consultant Workshop every tool they need to succeed! We know we cannot guarantee success. Having the tools is not enough. You have to put them to use! By giving you not only the course material but also the assignments where you will apply it hands on, you will learn how to be a web consultant and gain the needed expertise and experience to help small businesses use the internet. This is real world experience doing what will train you to help your clients and customers - just like we have been doing for the past 15 years. (Yes, we sold our first websites in 1994!)

NOTE: Currently we have the capacity to work with 49 individuals at any one time. New sessions of our workshop begin every Monday as long as there is room. If we exceed our capacity, you will be notified and placed in the next session. So if interested, we encourage you to sign up as soon as possible!

Recently we publicly debuted the Web Consultant Workshop at a Career Fair. Val and I were happy with the response and were especially happy for the opportunity to talk to individuals about our Web Consultant Workshop. We wanted to know what questions people would have.. and also whether we would have the answers! Since we have been doing this for so long, we thought we'd have the answers.. and we did. It was important to find out what the questions were, though.
Here are some of the questions from the Career Fair.. and the answers:
Q. How does a Web Consultant make money or earn an income?
A. There are two major areas:
The first is by selling your services at an hourly rate. Our bill rate is currently $60/hr. These billable services include website design, website construction, graphics work for the website, training the client or their staff member to maintain the site, search engine optimization consulting, and pay per click advertising campaign management.
The second is through recurring revenue generated by
(1.) being a reseller of hosting space for your client's websites,
(2.) license fees on server based software your client is using
(3.) markups you charge on the annual domain registrations you manage on your client's behalf.
NOTE: We cover this in greater detail in the Free Introductory Module "Being a Web Consultant".
Q. What would be a typical "Web Consultant" project?
A. We would meet with a new client and determine their needs for a web presence. We would provide an estimate for doing the work and then both sign a simple contract we call a "Memorandum of Engagement" specifying our rates, terms and what we are going to do. (It also tells us who in their organization is approved to tell us what to do on the project!) A small project might include 2 to 4 hours for template design work, one hour for each page in the site, and 1 to 3 hours for training. In addition, we host the site with the monthly license for the Content Management System we use for $15 to $60 per month. The average being $30/month.
Q. What software programs do I need to know to be a Web Consultant (or Website Designer or Web Publisher)?
A. There are two main programs and three or four secondary programs. The main two are our Dynamic Content Management System and a Graphics Editing program. The secondary programs are a simple text editor like Note Pad, a file transfer program (FTP) to move files up to the server from your computer, the Web Host Manager program to set up new accounts on the server, and the Control Panel software to manage the clients space and email accounts on the server. Our Web Consultant Workshop provides tutorials for all these programs.
Q. Do I need to be a programmer?
A. NO, you do NOT need to be a programmer. If you have had any programming classes or experience it would be helpful, but it is not required. The better you understand computers, the quicker you will be able to learn some of the modules... but you don't need to be a programmer, By the way, I am *NOT* a programmer. When I need programming done, I sub-contract the project out to someone else... and I don't need to do that very often.
Q. What effect is the economy having on being a Web Consultant?
A. That is a good question! Unless we have a complete meltdown of the economy, the future looks good for web consulting. I see many reasons for that.
One is that so many people are using the internet and world wide web today. Not just for entertainment but for communications and business. People I have talked to say they would cancel their cable TV BEFORE the internet. A number have mentioned that they can get most of what they watch on TV on the internet. One individual we spoke to at the Career Fair said he had started a firewood business to bring in some money until he got a permanent job. He had placed his flyer on bulletin boards all over town and was not getting any sales. He decided to place an ad on Craigslist... and within 30 minutes of placing the ad had his first order! This really shows the power of the internet!
Another reason I am optimistic is that in our web consulting business we are getting a steady stream of new projects. We are not aggressively advertising, but people still find us and are calling for websites. Some are individuals we may have spoken to a number of years ago who NOW feel they need a website. One person told us he had kept my card for 5 years.. and was not ready. His business had been fine without a website when the economy was good, but now he felt he needed to have one. This has happened a number of times in the past weeks. Without a website businesses are nearly invisible on the internet! Since the internet is where people are going to find information, businesses NEED to be on the web.
We are also finding a number of businesses that did not keep their websites fresh and current are now having us do more work keeping them updated. We also have clients who haven't been updating who have called for more training or refresher training so they can get their sites updated.
Another positive indicator for continued web consulting work and additional services are the number of clients that are asking for more features. I currently have four clients who are scheduled to install and begin using our new AutoResponder Add-on module with our Content Management System. They want to do more marketing via the internet and spend less on print advertising.
These are just a few of the factors that lead me to believe there is a good future for web consulting.
